Where Winds Meet gear guide — improve, tune and salvage with a plan
Keep gear aligned with one Path, understand Modulating Stones and avoid spending valuable materials on temporary upgrades.

Define the build before judging the item
Gear should support the Martial Arts, Path resource and defensive needs already present in the rotation. Compare attributes used by that loop instead of replacing a stable piece because one headline number rises. A coherent set produces repeatable combat; a collection of individually impressive pieces may not.
Write the build's priorities in plain language: survive one missed deflect, maintain the shared Path resource, improve the main burst, or shorten a recovery problem. An item earns resources when it serves one of those goals.
Separate temporary progress from long-term pieces
Early equipment keeps the story moving, so improve enough to remove the current obstacle and preserve flexible materials. Lock any piece with a useful combination before clearing inventory. Test the replacement in the same activity before treating the old piece as surplus.
Version 2.0 introduced Modulating Stones from salvaged Legendary Gear and improved material selection, favorites and tracking. That makes salvage part of progression, but the decision remains deliberate: confirm that a piece is outside the current and planned sets before converting it.
Tune one threshold at a time
Raise the smallest set that produces a meaningful result. If survivability is already comfortable, focus the next step on the Path's actual pressure. If the rotation breaks because a trigger or resource is missing, another generic damage increase will not repair it.
Exact balance values change, so use the live item and Inner Way descriptions for final calculations. Guides should explain the choice; the current client supplies the number.
Keep mode-specific assumptions separate
Exploration rewards a forgiving setup with sustain and dependable triggers. Boss attempts can support a more focused sequence after the attack pattern is known. PvP changes the value of control, resistance and break options. Preserve distinct purposes rather than producing one expensive set that is mediocre everywhere.
A safe upgrade checklist
- Name the Path and its main resource or status.
- Identify the gear attributes that support its real actions.
- Lock useful pieces before inventory cleanup.
- Improve only to the next meaningful threshold.
- Confirm a replacement in the same activity.
- Salvage Legendary Gear only after checking current and alternate sets.
- Re-read live descriptions after a major balance update.
