NTE team-building guide
Build a practical four-character team around Esper Cycle compatibility, damage windows, support, and survival.

Start with the main damage window
Choose the character who should stay active during the team's strongest window. The other slots should shorten setup, create useful reactions or keep that window safe.
Give every swap a purpose
A good rotation gains damage, control or resources with each switch. If a character enters only to perform weak basic attacks, replace that slot or change the order. Test the sequence on the same encounter so the comparison remains useful.
Keep a survival option
Story encounters may reward aggression, but unfamiliar bosses punish a team with no recovery or protection. A modest defensive slot often produces faster clears because it prevents resets.
Budget field time
Support characters should enter, perform the actions that enable the plan and leave before they consume the main attacker's window. If a support needs extended field time, account for it deliberately. A rotation should explain who is active, what they are waiting for and which cue hands control to the next Esper.
Use the Esper Cycle as a constraint. Compatible adjacent effects make Entry Attacks more valuable, while an individually attractive character with no connection can interrupt the loop. Establish a legal, repeatable sequence before optimizing equipment.
Compare teams fairly
Keep the target and opening order fixed. Record clear time, missed reactions and recovery used across several attempts. One lucky critical sequence is weak evidence. Prefer the squad that can recover after an imperfect dodge or delayed swap, especially while learning a boss.
Upgrade the rotation, not the collection
Prioritize the active damage dealer and the support actions that directly enable the window. Stop when the team clears its current objective reliably. Raising an unused character because they may fit a future composition delays the tested squad without solving today's limit.
When a new Esper arrives, compare roles before rarity. A lower-investment character already connecting the cycle may remain more useful than a new unit that needs different partners and equipment. Build the replacement on a test budget before dismantling a functioning sequence.
